I DID IT !! I WON !!! I BEAT MIKE FANTHAM !!!!
Er, sorry about that outburst, not very British was it?
Despite Tuesday being dull and rainy ,as forecast the evening was very flyable and we had a good evening’s entertainment. The rain dried up a little later than forecast at about 7:30pm. When timing in a group of 3 flyers this left one and a half hours to do 30 flights, so steady progress had to be made. A good job we didn’t do any maxes.
The wind was from the south but the launch/land box stopped any slope soaring of the trees. There was light lift at times over the rape field but circling down wind didn’t seem to work and if you went upwind you soon flew through the lift. There were only 5 flights over 2 minutes this time.
My Hybrid Highlight performed well in these conditions. When putting it together I went to considerable lengths to make it as light and aerodynamically clean as possible. I laminated a Depron tail which was lighter than a commercial item so no nose weight was needed. The fuselage is from a standard Highlight which has no carbon so the aerial is inside. There are no exposed pushrods or control horns on the wings or tail. It is bungee launched so there is no throwing peg. All this adds up to a model that launches a few feet higher than most and floats quite well.

The next Miniglider comp will be in the daytime, when there will be a distinct possibility of proper thermals! It’s on the 25th of July and starts at 2pm and finishes at 5pm.
See you there,
John.
