Venue:- Beacon Hill Wind:- SW 10-15 mph freshening to 25+
mph.
After what seems an endless number of attempts to call a Pylon comp on,
the rain relented, the low cloud did not appear and the wind blew.
Fifteen flyers, yes fifteen, turn up at Beacon to take on 'the hill' in
order to participate in a double comp of Foamie and Hard Pylon racing. All
entered the Foamie race and eleven signed up for the 'Crunchie' version.
The comp was run with 3 rounds in each class, each round having 3 slots.
We started with a round of Foamie, flown to BMFA rules. This helped all
concerned get their eye in and into the swing of things, flagging and calling.
There was one round where the flags were clearly out of sync, requiring
the models to land to re-identify and re-start the race. Generally though,
the comps ran pretty smoothly.
There were a few amusing and interesting flights. One involved 2 of the
3 foamies being launched where the models landed at the lower path more
than once. The pilot who launched cleanly could not believe his luck and
cruised the race. There were some close races in the both classes with one
dead heat. The Sblitz foamie flying wing demonstrated its performance over
the Zagi. In one race after each turn the Sblitz just pulled away. I suppose
the moment of most impact was when Paul Wright, Graham Stallard and Ian
Lancaster flying in their last slot in the last round. Both Paul and Graham
were in close contention to make the fly off and were in close contention
in the race. Paul had just completed the right hand turn whilst Graham was
approaching, when both models tried to occupy the same space. There were
a lot of bits. Ian duly completed the race to collect his points. It is
estimated the closing speed of the two models at impact was 100mph+. During
one slot Percy, was having trouble seeing his model, so moved down the slope
to see better. He slipped and took quiet a tumble. Unfortunately by the
time he regained his feet his model had executed a diving roll to land out
of sight down the front. Of course it was the Crunchie model and not the
foamie. Percy was quiet dazed by the trip but recovered enough to take part
in the Foamie fly off.
The Hard fly off was between Alan Perkis, Roger Critchley and Chris Moynihan
(flying a Sambal). The race got off to a clean start of 20 laps. Chris found
the sweet spot and really got the Sambal moving, once ahead he kept the
position to win.

The foamie fly off was a good race between Percy, Paul Wright (Sblitz) and Alan Stringer (Sblitz), again over 20 laps. The race was pretty close with Paul also finding the sweet spot and really getting his Sblitz moving. The wind was 25 mph+ by now and the models went pretty well. Paul won by two laps and Alan finished two laps ahead of Percy. Some of this lead was the result of cuts. Overall the comp was enjoyed by all. All we need now is for the weather Gods to arrange suitable weather for the 24th February for the next comp. If you have a Zagi, you own a model suitable to take part with. In some of the races all three models were only meters apart as they crossed the line, this includes Zagis. However if your birthday is coming up soon and you fancy a go, leave enough clues around to be surprised with a Sblitz for your birthday.
